MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) reminded the public yesterday the nationwide smoking ban would take effect starting July 23, or 60 days after the signing of Executive Order 26. Last May 16, Duterte signed EO 26, which prohibits smoking in public and enclosed areas across the country. The EO states that there should be only one designated smoking area per establishment. DOH spokesman Eric Tayag said the EO can be implemented even without the implementing rules and regulations, or IRR.

While some bar and club owners were worried about what the smoking ban would do for business, Lindon said it's just about accommodating everyone. The smoke-free ordinance goes into effect August 1st. Lindon said he has supported the smoke-free ordinance since the beginning, working with city-parish lawmakers.

DOH readies nationwide smoking ban

The nationwide opioid ban, according to Dr. Enrique Tayag, would be enforced starting on July 23. The Department of Health (DOH) is preparing to enforce a nationwide ban on smoking, inspired by the success of such a ban in Davao City that started when President Duterte was still the city's mayor. "An IRR is not necessary in implementing the smoking ban," Tayag said. ADVERTISEMENT"There should also be a buffer zone in designated smoking areas," Tayag said. "Those who cannot comply with the requirements of the smoking ban might end up as an example of an offender," said Tayag, spokesperson for the DOH, also the lead implementing agency of the ban as mandated by Executive Order (EO) No.
